I recently returned to Laramie, WY to see three Walcker organs. I started with the University of Wyoming in the practice rooms. The Walcker practice organ has been disassembled for storage, and the other instrument is built by an unknown builder. Next I went to the Fine Arts Auditorium to play the 1973 Walcker organ. See the previous post for comments on the instrument.
Then I went to the Zion Lutheran Church. This tiny instrument is still loud enough to support the congregation. The church seats about 150. The entire instrument, except for the 16′ Bourdun, is under expression using plexiglass swell shades. Most of the organ is deafening for the organist, but quite balanced in the room.
We then proceeded to First UMC in Laramie. The building is very strange, but has a nice acoustic. The organ does not have any reeds, but lots of Mixtures. One of the unique things about the First UMC organ is that above the organ case is a facade using the 16′ Bourdun. I fully enjoyed my time in Laramie, and have demonstrated these instruments, which can be found on the recordings page. I also visited St. Matthew’s Episcopal Cathedral, which houses an E M Skinner organ. I always love this instrument and church, so it was a pleasure to be back. For pictures of these instruments, see the photos page. I would like to thank Punch Williamson, curator of all the organs visited, for his help and demonstration.
